Don't Start A Government Contracting Business

Aug 16, 2024

Don't start a government contracting business—start a business first.

I'm Rick Howard, owner of DoD Contract Academy, and I've seen many aspiring entrepreneurs make the mistake of diving into government contracting without a solid business foundation.

If you don’t have a product or service to sell, what are you offering the government? Finding a contract and writing proposals without actual capabilities is a losing strategy. Instead, focus on building a viable business, whether it's B2B or B2C, and then explore government contracting as an additional revenue stream.

For those new to this space, consider becoming a consultant or advisor instead. Our certification program can guide you through this process, helping you build a lucrative career without the pitfalls of trying to start a government contracting business from scratch.

Remember, government contracting is a long game, full of complexities. Approach it with your eyes wide open, and only after you've established a successful business. Leave your comments or suggestions for future videos, and let's continue this conversation.
